PROJECT STATEMENT
In my video work Link (2011) I have attempted to heighten the experience for the Cosplayer of their immersion into the character of Link. My intention was to create for the Cosplayer a cinematic trailer to crystalize their experience. Merging fantasy with reality, the video presents the dual relationship between the character Link's love of his homeland Hyrule alongside the Cosplayers own experience of a local country park. The film opens with shots of the picturesque scenery whilst Link plays a mournful lullaby on his Ocarina for his lost Princess. Then the action begins as Link commences his journey, careering along pathways in a third-person perspective and recreating Link's moves with his sword. The videos closes as it started, in a perpetual loop, as Link is tied to the computer game that may never be completed.
My video work attempts re-enforces the innocence and fragility of the character, Link. He is young boy embarking on a dangerous quest. Though this is clear to the game narrative, this idea is lost over repeated plays. Thus Link becomes a vehicle in which to move through the game.My work and the Cosplayer actualise the characterisation, re-enforcing the narrative that the game developer has constructed. The anonymity of the vehicle is questioned and it can re-invigorate gameplay for the jaded.
